چکیده

The physical environment is becoming more and more saturated with computing and communication entities that interact among themselves, as well as with users: virtually everything will be enabled to source information and respond to appropriate stimuli. In this technology-rich scenario, real-world components interact with cyberspace via sensing, computing and communication elements, thus driving towards what is called the Cyber–Physical World (CPW) convergence. Information flows from the physical to the cyber world, and vice-versa, adapting the converged world to human behavior and social dynamics. Indeed humans are at the center of this convergedworld since information about the context in which they operate is the key element to adapt the CPW applications and services. Alongside, a newwave of (human) social networks and structures are emerging as important drivers for the development of novel communication and computing paradigms. In this article we present some of the research issues, challenges and opportunities in the convergence between the cyber and physical worlds. This article is not a comprehensive survey of all aspects of the CPW convergence. Instead, it presents some exciting research challenges and opportunities identified by members of the journal’s editorial board with a goal to stimulate new research activities in the emerging areas of CPW convergence. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The Civil Responsibility of Government in the Cyberspace: Looking at the Cyber Ethics

Background: Given the appropriateness of cyberspace and its interconnectedness, each country is expected to minimize the possibility of harmful actions by securing and continuously monitoring the Internet and the virtual world. Of course, part of this goal will be achieved through the adoption of appropriate national laws and, in part, through proper education of citizens and the development of...

Keynote I Middleware for Pervasive and Cyber-Physical Systems

Middleware typically provides abstractions for common tasks such as atomicity, synchronization and communication with the intention of isolating the developers of distributed applications from lower-level details of the underlying platforms. Although one would like to develop generic middleware services which can be used in a variety of different applications, efficiency considerations often fo...

Software Engineering Education for the Pervasive Human-Centric Computing Era

Moving away from decades of machine-centric computing and making pervasive human-centric computing, the new wave of computing, a reality revolutionises the relationship between humans and computing systems. In order to implement the vision of pervasive human-centric computing, it is necessary to reform software engineering education to well prepare graduates of software engineering programmes f...
